Bike and Pedestrian Planning Meeting NotesAdded Tue, Aug 25, 2009 From Brian Kienert's attendance... The August 20th City Bike and Pedestrian Planning Meeting was very well attended with almost every chair in the room used. The large City Display Boards were put out around the room to illustrate the existing plan and so all could provide our input of where they ride to and from. The displays were impressive! Dave Buck, City Engineer, agreed to set up this same display at the "Tour de Titan" so people see what we are riding for before the ride". Sarah had me to explain the "Tour de Titan" community awareness ride and how it is designed to promote the passage of the "Ped and Bike Circulation Plan". The interest was very high, and the input was very good.Bike N' Ride in the NewsAdded Tue, Aug 25, 2009 From the Oshkosh Community Media Services:The Oshkosh Transit System introduces their new "Bike N' Ride" program this week on CitiCable 10. People need to have the freedom to choose to bicycle for transportation, fitness or recreation and to do so safely and without harassment. On Monday April 27 we will gather at the Madison Concourse hotel to lay the groundwork for establishing Wisconsin as one of the world's greatest places to be on a bike. Twenty-three OCC members made the meeting -- six spoke.Jersey Mania (updated)Added Tue, Feb 17, 2009 Long Sleeve Jersey prices updated on 2/17. Bedlam reigns at Election! The 2009 OCC Spaghetti Dinner was rocked by the new OCC jersey reveal! The hot new design caused fashion frenzy and sold out in minutes as project staffers took to flinging iconic jerseys into the crazed mob! "We stopped collecting and just put them out there, said Urban! "We just wanted to live". Urban, now recovering, updated the controversial jersey with striking design panache! It was a slam dunk! Kienert, who lead the original design team, fled from the 2nd production giving little explanation. He gave cart blanch to Urban cryptically making only 3 requests. "Keep the colors; they symbolize the pinnacle of our sport". "Keep the emblem; it depicts our creation myth". "Keep the logo; the letters are wheels - shh", then he vanished. Urban, who was shaken but unharmed by the frenzy, now trusts payments will be made post delivery. The modest designer was unprepared for its amazing popularity! Said one onlooker, "The first design was cool, but now it's cool on steroids." Initial adulation turned to shock, denial, dismay, and finally demands for a 2nd Order! As pressure mounted the conclusion was inevitable. Kienert reluctantly intervened. An unnamed source quoted him to say, "Every time I'm out, they pull me back in! I saw it coming. That jersey has a life of its own. No one can control that much cool! We have no Choice! 2nd Jersey Order is On! Last Call! Orders Must Be in By Feb 26th! See Attached! Note: Jersey's are sold at cost to OCC Members! Price Details Below!

It's the beginning of the cycling season. We're now at last able to get out on the road. Let's be careful. It's early enough that cars are not expecting us. Still, even at the end of the summer, cars still aren't expecting us. So, ride defensively. Obey traffic rules. Be respectful of drivers (even when they might not always be respectful of you). Together cars and bikes need to cooperate and share the road. This weekend there was an accident in Wrightstown. I biked by it after the ambulance left but before the cops had cleared the accident scene. To see the sheriff's department at an accident scene with fallen bikes is really hard. Let's do our best to avoid any more accidents. Looking for defensive cycling suggestions? See David Zabriske's Yield to Life site and the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office's bicycle safety page Edwin's Bike ReturnedAdded Mon, Apr 21, 2008 In early April we posted a link for Edwin Jager. This is truly weird. It's 15 minutes long but the monkey people [no, I'm NOT making this up] are beyond bizarre! Planet of the Apes meets bicycle safety. Even more fascinating is the 1963-slant to the who thing. Enjoy.Watch Out for Squirrels!Added Tue, Feb 05, 2008 There's a lot of discussion about bicycle safety. Cycling is not a risk-free activity (as is shown by August 20th being Our Sorrowful Mothers of Bikers with Broken Clavicles Day). Still, it is fairly rare to hear of a squirrel getting caught in a bike rim bringing the rider and the bike to a quick, screeching halt. That is, however, what happened to Anthony Ricupero as reported in Greenwich Times. It might be forgivable to laugh a little at the improbability of the event if it were not for the fact that Anthony will have to undergo back surgery to repair the damage caused by the fall. Our best wishes to him. Thanks, Monty for sending us the link.Sheldon Brown PassesAdded Mon, Feb 04, 2008 It is with sadness that I learned reading the Fredcast Twitter that Sheldon Brown has passed. You see rain in wonderful shades of green, yellow and (maybe) red. What do you do? The more conservative side of your brain is probably suggesting that you ought to play it safe and stay home from the group ride. If you're a bike nerd, the rest of your brain is telling you to chance it. What should you do? Gear up and prepare to ride! Unless the entire state is covered with rain, chances are that the rain will pass by with a brief shower or perhaps (if you're lucky) with no rain at all! Short of lightning, the worst that will happen is that a) you'll need to be a little more careful riding on wet pavement (especially after the rain just starts as road grime takes a while to get cleaned from the roads) and b) you'll need to wash your bike after you're done. On the otherhand, if the rain passes by, you'll get a great ride. In either case, BE SAFE, but don't make up your mind until as late as possible. If you give up early, you might just miss out on a great ride. For those that gave up this Wednesday, you missed out. ...Food for thought! Help fight leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma!Added 5/23/2007 Gregg Jozwik is riding for his friend Bob who is suffering from pre-indolent cell lymphoma (a blood cancer).
