Want a slimmer, healthier community? Try building more sidewalks, crosswalks and bike paths.

A study authored by Professor David Bassett Jr. from the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation and Sport Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and three other researchers was published August 19 in the American Journal of Public Health, concluding that communities with more walkers and cyclists are healthier than those where people must rely on cars to get around.

Ric is looking to get funding from Pepsi to build a mountain bike
trail. He's in the running. Let's make sure it stays that way!
From Ric:

A proposal by the Ripon College Red Hawks Cycling Team to build
singletrack mountain bike trails in the wooded areas of the
College's Ceresco Prairie Conservancy has been accepted for voting
by the Pepsi Refresh Project. This is a competitive voting program
in which the College is seeking $25,000 to hire the International
Mountain Bicycling Association's Trail Solutions Crew to design and
build the trails so that they are both technically challenging and
environmentally sustainable.

This fall will mark the third year of the Ripon College cycling
team. We've experienced moderate success already, but our team has
no mountain bike trails within 20 miles to train on. Adding this
resource right in our own backyard will make a tremendous difference
in bolstering the success of our team and making our program one of
the best in the nation. The College has also been giving out more
than 150 free mountain bikes a year to incoming freshmen who pledge
not to bring a car to campus. These trails will give those
students, as well as all mountain bikers a place to ride in Ripon.
That's right, these trails will be open to all mountain bikers.
They will also make excellent snow shoe trails come winter.

There are many deserving projects competing for limited dollars.
Only the 10 projects with the most votes will be awarded grants.
Therefore each and every vote is critical. It is easy to create an
account at http://www.refresheverything.com. Once you do, you can
vote once every day through August 31. That's right, we're asking
you to make this part of your daily routine, by voting each and
every day between now and August 31.

We also ask that you spread the word by encouraging friends, family
and others to vote as well.

Go to
http://www.refresheverything.com/biketrailripon today and
every day and vote.

Thank you for your support.

Oshkosh Cyclery and Fitness will be hosting the 2nd annual
Tri Night on Monday, March 22nd, from 6pm to 9pm. Tim Petrie
will be sharing his ideas and tips about the sport of Triathlons.
The evening will cover: triathlon culture, training time needed,
goals in the sport, longevity, equipment needed,
clothing, what to expect at a race, what not to do, and great beginner
races.

If you have a couple of Tris under your belt or are just
thinking about trying the sport, this meeting will be very
informative and helpful. You will pick up some valuable training
tips and some nutrition ideas. Last year Tim was suppose to be
here for 2 hours but once the question session started it ended
up lasting for 4 hours! Tim is so happy to help others improve.

Tim Petrie lives for the sport of triathlons. Tim did his
first Tri in 2001 and has done 125 races since and is as
passionate about the sport as ever. Tim is currently a student
at UW-Oshkosh studying to be a Physical Education teacher and
truly values promoting lifelong fitness and health. Tim's schooling
and experience as an athlete has taught him how powerful the mind
and body can be working together. The sport of triathlon is great
for both, and Tim looks forward to expressing his passion about
triathlons and how you can be happy while training and racing for
years to come.

Mark your calendar and plan to attend this year's Wisconsin
Bike Summit! Last year our exciting Summit brought together over
450 bike enthusiasts from around the state. The 2009 Summit proved
that when we join together our collective voice is strong and we
are heard. We were able to accomplish the following important
legislation in 2009 thanks to you and the strength of our Summit:

Statewide Complete Streets legislation

$5 million increase in state bicycle funding

Dooring legislation

For 2010, we're adding new educational workshops and creating
a line-up of inspiring speakers to make this year's Summit an
even greater opportunity to learn, network, and support Wisconsin
bicycling. Please join us this year and together we will work
to make Wisconsin the best place in the world to be on a bike!
